How to make a free website with WordPress step by step Tutorial and each step with easy language and ready to access
Important First Note: "Free" Website Explained
When we say "free," we are using WordPress.com, which is like an all-in-one hotel for your website. They give you a room (your site) for free, but the address will have their name in it (e.g., myawesomewebsite.wordpress.com). This is perfect for starting a blog, a hobby site, or a portfolio.
(The other version, WordPress.org, is more powerful but requires you to pay for web hosting and a domain name. This guide is for the completely free option.)
Phase 1: Getting Started - Sign Up & Setup
Step 1: Go to WordPress.com
Open your web browser (like Chrome, Firefox, or Safari) and go to:
https://wordpress.com
You will see a page with a button that says "Start your website" or "Get Started." Click on it.
Step 2: Create Your Account
You'll be asked to enter your email address, choose a username, and create a password.
Email Address: Use one you check regularly. This is how you'll manage your site.
Username: This will be your identity on WordPress.com and is often part of your free site's address.
Password: Make it strong and unique.
Click "Continue" or "Create your account."
Step 3: Choose Your Free Address (Domain)
This is your website's address on the internet. WordPress will now ask you to choose a domain.
You will see an option to "Choose a domain later." Select this option. This is the key to staying free for now.
Later, WordPress will give you the free domain, which will look like: yoursitename.wordpress.com.
💡 Simple Tip: Think of a name that is easy to remember and relates to what your website is about.
Step 4: Select the Free Plan
WordPress.com will show you different paid plans with more features. Scroll down until you see the "Free" plan.
Click on the "Start with Free" button.
It might ask for a confirmation. Confirm that you want the free plan.
Congratulations! The technical setup is done. Your website now exists at yoursitename.wordpress.com. Next, we'll make it look good.
Phase 2: Making It Yours - Design & Content
Step 5: Explore Your Dashboard
After signing up, you'll be taken to your "Dashboard." This is your website's control room. It's where you control everything. Don't be scared by the menus; we'll focus on the most important ones.
Step 6: Choose a Design (Theme)
The "Theme" is the design template for your website. It controls how it looks.
On the left-hand menu in your Dashboard, click on "Appearance" and then select "Themes."
You'll see hundreds of free designs. You can scroll through them.
To see how a theme looks, click on it and then click the "Preview" button.
When you find one you like, click the "Activate" button to make it live on your site.
💡 Simple Tip: For beginners, simple and clean themes like "Twenty-Twenty Three" or "Twenty-Twenty Four" are great choices.
Step 7: Create Your First Page (Your Homepage)
Most websites have a "Home" page as the first thing people see.
On the left menu, go to "Pages" and click "Add New Page."
You'll see a blank screen. At the top, type a title, like "Welcome to My Site".
Below the title, you can start typing your text. You can add pictures by clicking the "+" button and selecting "Image."
When you're happy, click the "Publish" or "Update" button in the top right corner.
Step 8: Create a Menu
A menu helps visitors navigate your site (e.g., Home, About, Contact).
Go to "Appearance" > "Menus".
Click "Create a new menu." Give it a name (like "Main Menu").
On the left, you'll see your pages. Check the box next to the page you created (e.g., "Home") and click "Add to Menu."
Drag the page in the menu area to adjust its position.
Finally, click "Save Menu."
Step 9: Write Your First Blog Post (Optional)
If you want a blog, this is how you do it.
On the left menu, click on "Posts" and then "Add New Post."
It works just like creating a page: add a title and write your content.
Click "Publish" when you're done.
Phase 3: You're Live! - Next Steps
Step 10: Visit Your Website!
At any time, you can see your live website.
In the top bar of your Dashboard, you'll see your site's name. Click on it and select "Visit site" to see how it looks to the public.
Step 11: Customize Further (The Fun Part)
Go to "Appearance" > "Customize". This is a powerful area where you can play with your site's look in real-time. You can:
Change colors and fonts.
Adjust your site's header.
Set your homepage.
Any change you make here will be shown in a preview, and you have to click "Publish" to make it live.
