Traditional Proverbs (諺 - Kotowaza)

1.  "七転び八起き"  (Nana korobi ya oki) – "Fall seven times, rise eight."
2.  "猿も木から落ちる" (Saru mo ki kara ochiru) –  "Even monkeys fall from trees."  (No one is perfect.)  




3.  "出る杭は打たれる"  (Deru kui wa utareru) –  "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down."   
4.  "石の上にも三年"   (Ishi no ue ni mo sannen) –  "Three years on a stone."  (Persistence pays off.)  
5.  "井の中の蛙、大海を知らず"  (I no naka no kawazu, taikai o shirazu) – "A frog in a well knows nothing of the sea." 



6.   "花より団子"   (Hana yori dango) – "Dumplings over flowers."   (Substance over beauty.)  


  



7.   "塵も積もれば山となる"   (Chiri mo tsumoreba yama to naru) –  "Even dust piled up becomes a mountain."  
8.   "虎穴に入らずんば虎子を得ず"   (Koketsu ni irazunba koji o ezu) – "Nothing ventured, nothing gained."  



9.   "風が吹けば桶屋が儲かる"   (Kaze ga fukeba okeya ga moukaru) – "When the wind blows, the bucket-maker profits."* (Unexpected consequences.)  



10.  "一期一会"   (Ichi-go ichi-e) – "One time, one meeting."  (Treasure every encounter.)
